SG2 steel, also known as Super Gold 2 or R2 steel, is a high-quality powdered steel known for its exceptional properties in knife making. SG2 steel was developed by Takefu Special Steel Co. Ltd. in Japan and consists of a combination of a high carbon content and added elements such as chromium, molybdenum and vanadium.

The composition of this steel results in excellent edge retention, high hardness and good corrosion resistance, making it very popular with professional chefs and enthusiastic home hobbyists. The fine structure of SG2 steel ensures precise sharpening and high finish in sharpness, with the great advantage of being able to retain their sharpness for a long time, even with intensive use.

Elwin de Veld about Naohito Myojin

Naohito Myojin grew up in his father's workshop. He began his training at the age of 18, first training as a blacksmith for 3 years before switching to sharpening. Myojin-san is widely regarded as one of Japan’s most talented and unique master sharpeners. He trained for 10 years under Morihiro-san at the renowned Konosuke Sakai studio before setting up his own studio in Kōchi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku in southern Japan.

Myojin-san’s work is recognizable by its refined finish, with details such as the spine and heel finished to perfection, and he strives not only to master traditional techniques but also to innovate on every occasion. Kitchen knives sharpened by this master often have fine, yet firm, folds that are finished with incredible precision. Myojin also brings the same level of focus, precision and attention to detail to the finishing of his sharpening.
