The Gokujyo series from Baba Hamono originated with Max, who, after moving to Japan, was trained as a sharpener within the Baba workshop. Under the guidance of experienced masters, he developed his own sharpening style, which formed the foundation of this series. In 2024, Max stepped away from his work at Baba Hamono.
The sharpening of the Gokujyo series is now carried on by Yuki Wakae-san, an in-house sharpener at Baba Hamono. While every sharpener has a distinct personal approach, Wakae-san’s work closely aligns with the philosophy and quality standards of Baba Hamono. The Gokujyo series thus remains an expression of traditional craftsmanship, continued by the next generation within the same workshop.
