The traditional Japanese pattern Seigaiha 青海波 means "waves of the blue sea." 青 means "blue", 海 means "sea", and 波 means "wave." As the name suggests, the pattern represents stylized waves lined up next to and on top of each other. The wave crest pattern is one of most well known traditional and typical geometrical patterns of Japan.
The name of “Seigaiha” is said to be derived from an episode of Gagaku ( known as Japanese elegant or classical music ). This motif was used in one the costumes of the gagaku dancers named “Seigaiha”. While it also being said to be derived from the name of a craftsman who designed the costume.
During Takayuki's visit, President Aoki-san explained how he came up with the idea for the Seigaiha series. The popular anime series Demon Slayer served as the inspiration for this line of knives.
The story follows the main character, Tanjiro Kamado, who joins the Demon Slayer Corps after his family is attacked by demons. His goal is to find a cure for his sister, Nezuko, who has been transformed into a demon. Throughout his journey, he learns what it means to be a true samurai and masters a variety of techniques.
One of these techniques is Water Breathing, which allows him to move with great fluidity and become one with his sword. Throughout the series, the imagery of the "waves of the blue sea" appears repeatedly. It was here that Aoki-san drew the connection to the traditional Seigaiha pattern, which became the foundation for the design of this knife series.
After years of development, Sakai Takayuki has designed a damascus (Suminagashi) inspired by the Seigaiha pattern. Ingeniously positioning the layers of steel before forging, a beautiful wave pattern appears on every blade in this series. A wonderful display of Sakai takayuki's extreme knowledge and respect for tradition, combined in every knife of the Seigaiha series.
