K-petty • 150 mm • 3 layers • SG2 • Japanese walnut handle • for both left and right handed us
Baba Hamono knives are known for their high quality, dedication, and craftsmanship. This is reflected in the extremely thin grinding of the blade. The SG2 series includes three different Kengata models, all featuring a long bevel and a high shinogi line.
Due to this geometry, the tip of the knife is relatively exposed, making it somewhat more prone to chipping under improper use. The kanji is hand-engraved, giving the knife a calm yet artisanal appearance.
The blade is paired with a walnut wood handle, which gives the knife its calm and unique character.
SG2 steel, also known as Super Gold 2 or R2 steel, is a high-quality powdered steel known for its exceptional properties in knife making. SG2 steel was developed by Takefu Special Steel Co. Ltd. in Japan and consists of a combination of a high carbon content and added elements such as chromium, molybdenum and vanadium.
The composition of this steel results in excellent edge retention, high hardness and good corrosion resistance, making it very popular with professional chefs and enthusiastic home hobbyists. The fine structure of SG2 steel ensures precise sharpening and high finish in sharpness, with the great advantage of being able to retain their sharpness for a long time, even with intensive use.
Baba Hamono had been on my list of places to visit for a long time. When Baba contacted me to do business I knew I had to jump in right away. There are some very important and leading sharpeners in Sakai and Baba Hamono is one of the top 3. It is an honor to do business with these knife makers, who bring tradition and modern craftsmanship together in a unique way.
Knives with a double-sharpened blade and a double shinogi are not new. The refinement with which Baba Hamono finishes his knives can certainly be called unique. The thinning of the blade has been so perfected that there is no unevenness, as you often have with cheaper inferior models. An extremely thin cutting surface provides unparalleled ease of cutting.
